Creating Thomas's Woodland

Thomas was always happiest outside, and he believed in cherishing our natural landscapes, both for ecological reasons and as places to enjoy. During his illness he spoke of wanting to create a woodland or meadow of native species, to be managed sustainably -  a space for wildlife to thrive and for the public to enjoy. He left money in his will to begin this project, and with your help we are raising further funds to realise his vision.

We hope to see Thomas's woodland take root and grow into a space that everyone involved can visit, to reflect and remember him in a place that he created.

 News

Funds raised so far have been used to establish a meadow alongside the Thames, to be known as Thomas's Meadow and accessible to the public.

Tom's friends and colleagues from DFID have now planted 253 indigenous trees at two sites in South Africa: Itumeleng Madiba Primary School in Shoshanguve and Rietvlei Nature Reserve in Pretoria. Follow the links to see the galleries!

Tryfan to Burcot raises £6500

Combining driving rain and steep hills with beautiful views and peaceful stretches, the ride proved to be as great a challenge as we'd all hoped for. Find out how it went here, and huge thanks to all involved!

Tryfan to Burcot jerseys on their way!

Some excellent Tryfan to Burcot jerseys, designed by Ros, are currently being printed by Pente14 - we can't wait to try them on! They feature both the Woodland Fund oak and the (rather intimidating) elevation profile of the whole 250 mile ride.

We now have upwards of 20 people taking part in an epic fund-raising cycle from Tryfan in North Wales back to Burcot from the 19th to the 23rd of July. It's looking like the sort of challenge that Tom would have revelled in - the toughest day is about 100km and 1800m of elevation! Find out more on the Tryfan to Burcot page or sponsor the event via the Donate page.

Trees Around the World

Apart from the two beautiful oak trees planted at Thomas's commemoration in the garden, a number of other trees have already been planted in his memory around the world, like this wonderful Mountain Cabbage in the garden of the British High Commission in Pretoria.
